Red light panels are sold on two numbers, and one of them is close to meaningless. Learning which is which is most of the buying decision.

Irradiance is the number; total wattage is the marketing

Panels are advertised by total wattage, which tells you how much power the wall socket delivers, not how much light reaches your skin. The number that matters is irradiance: milliwatts per square centimetre, at a stated distance.

The trap is the stated distance. A panel measured at 0 inches and a panel measured at 6 inches can print similar-looking figures while delivering very different doses at the distance you will actually stand. If a listing quotes irradiance without a distance, treat the figure as absent rather than as good.

Wavelengths: two bands, and be suspicious of a long list

Two ranges carry the research: red around 660nm and near-infrared around 850nm. Some panels add 630nm and 810nm, which is reasonable. A panel advertising five or six bands including blue and green is optimising for the spec sheet.

Near-infrared is invisible. A panel that looks dim in the near-infrared mode is working correctly, and a panel that glows brightly in “NIR mode” is leaking visible red into it.

Flicker, which nobody lists

Cheap drivers pulse at mains frequency. You will not see it, but you can catch it with a phone camera in slow motion: banding across the panel means flicker. It is the single easiest quality check available to you, and it costs nothing.
