Space heater extension cord: which are safe to use
Short answer: use the shortest, largest-gauge cord that fits the heater, uncoiled, with nothing else plugged into it or into a power strip. Most space heater fires from a cord come from three avoidable mistakes: too thin a gauge, a coiled cord, or a multi-outlet strip.
Why a space heater is different from your other appliances
A phone charger draws a few watts. A lamp draws tens. A 1500 W space heater on a 120 V US outlet draws about 12.5 amps (watts divided by volts), and it holds that draw for hours while the room heats. The wire heats in proportion to the current, so a cord that is fine for a lamp can run hot as a heater’s only link to the wall.
The label tells you the draw. The heater’s nameplate states its watts; divide by your line voltage for the amps, then size the cord above that with room to spare.
Gauge is the whole game
Cord capacity is set by the copper thickness, the American Wire Gauge (AWG) number: smaller number, thicker wire, more current it can carry safely. For a sustained multi-hour load like a space heater, the widely repeated consumer guideline is a 14 AWG minimum, and 12 AWG for the heaviest heaters, on the shortest run you can arrange.

Choose 16 AWG for: lamps and phone chargers only, never a space heater. Choose 14 AWG for: the standard 1500 W heater on a short run. Choose 12 AWG for: the maximum margin on the heaviest heaters, or any run you cannot keep short. If you are choosing, the 12 AWG short cord is the least likely to ever be the problem, and the difference in price is small.
The three avoidable mistakes
Too thin a gauge. The single most common cause. If the cord is 16 AWG (or unmarked) and the heater is 1500 W, replace the cord before you replace the thermostat.
A coiled cord. A cord coiled or wrapped around its spool traps its own heat and derates what the same gauge could carry when laid out straight. Uncoil it fully every time. A cord in a tight coil on a heater, on a floor, or shoved behind furniture is doing the exact wrong thing.
A power strip or multi-outlet cord. Power strips and surge protectors are for low-draw electronics, and their overcurrent protection is sized to them, not to a heater sharing the strip. Plugging a space heater into a power strip, or into a multi-outlet extension lead, plus something else, is a documented residential fire pattern. The heater gets its own wall socket, its own single cord, and nothing else on the same outlet circuit if you can avoid it.
Read the cord before you trust it
The cord’s jacket is printed with its gauge and rating. If a cord does not state its gauge, treat that as the same signal a missing spec is anywhere in this category: the silent product told you the most useful thing it has.
- Length. A 6-foot 14 AWG cord behaves very differently from a 50-foot 16 AWG cord. Longer means more resistance means more heat; for a heater, shorter is safer.
- Unmarked or unknown cord. Do not use it for a heater. This is one of the few cases where “it probably works” gets a flat no.
- Extension-only. A “3-outlet” or “tap” cord still concentrates the same current decision into one plug. The safer shape is one outlet, one heater.
