Humidity in the bedroom is a sleep-quality lever people overlook until the air dries out in winter and the nose pays for it. A humidifier is rated two ways and only one of them tells you whether it will work.

Output, not tank

Tank size tells you how often you refill. Output, in gallons per day, tells you whether the unit can actually raise the humidity of your room. A large tank with weak output is a unit that runs all night and changes nothing, which is the most common disappointed review in the category.

As a rough target, a single bedroom needs roughly 1 to 2 gallons per day, an open-plan living space 2 to 4, and a whole floor considerably more than a portable unit will deliver. Buy for the room you will actually put it in with the door closed.

Cool mist versus warm mist is a cleaning decision

Warm mist boils the water, which kills most of what is living in the tank and costs more electricity. Cool mist uses a wick or ultrasonic plate and costs less to run, but the tank becomes a culture unless you clean it.

Ultrasonic units have a third problem: they aerosolise whatever is dissolved in your water, which lands as white dust on every surface. If your water is hard, either use distilled water or do not buy ultrasonic.

Get a hygrometer

Target 40 to 50 percent relative humidity. Below 30 you get static and dry sinuses; above 60 you are growing mould inside your walls. A humidifier without a hygrometer is an open loop, and the $10 meter is the accessory that makes the purchase work.

What to ignore

Built-in humidity readouts on the unit itself, which sit in the middle of the mist they are producing and read high. UV sterilisation claims, where contact time is far too short to matter.
